Our story

A Sheep Farm by the Lake

Austurey has been in our family since 1926.

Today, the tradition continues as our family still raises sheep at Austurey 1, while also operating a water supply utility and contributing to the local heating utility. Part of Lake Apavatn and the Hólaá river lie within the land of Austurey 1—an area well known for its excellent fishing.

We, Lárus Kjartansson and Magndís H. Sigmarsdóttir, are the proud owners of Austurey Gisting ehf (Austurey Cottages and Austurey Lakefront Villa). Together, we have four daughters: Anna Kolbrún, Auður María, Magnea Ósk, and Helga Marín.

Our journey in hospitality began in the summer of 2017 when we started building six cottages, which opened on June 1st, 2018. Two years later, we added the Lakefront Villa, beautifully situated at the edge of land where the river Hólaá flows into Lake Apavatn. Nestled right on the lakefront, it offers stunning views and a peaceful connection to nature.

We truly enjoy welcoming visitors to Austurey and always strive to make each stay as comfortable and memorable as possible.
