Our story
A Sheep Farm by the Lake
Austurey has been owned by the same family since 1926. Today the family still raises sheep as well as running a heating utility and water supply utility. Part of the lake Apavatn and the river Hólaá is also part of Austurey´s land, which is a popular place to fish.
We, Lárus Kjartansson and Magndís H. Sigmarsdóttir are the owners of Austurey Cottages. We have four daughters, Anna Kolbrún, Auður María, Magnea Ósk and Helga Marín.
We started building six cottages in the summer of 2017, which were ready on the 1st of June 2018. Then in 2019 we built our dreamhouse down by the lake. We lived in it until 2022 when we sized down and moved to Laugarvatn (10 minutes away). The villa has now been licenced to rent out full time We truly hope that our guests will enjoy it as much as we did.
We love welcoming guests to Austurey and try to accommodate our guests in the best possible way.
Austurey Cottages
Six cottages built for privacy and unobstructed views, located in Austurey 1 by lake Apavatn.
The sleeping area contains a ready-made double bed (160cm) which leads to a private bathroom with a shower. Each cottage has a kitchenette as well as a table and chairs for dining.
The living room contains a smart flat screen television and a sofa where guests can relax and enjoy the view over the lake as well as the surrounding mountains and volcanoes Hekla and Eyjafjallajökull.
In front of each house is a heated veranda with private garden furniture and barbecue facilities (gas grill).
Lakefront Villa
Austurey Lakefront Villa is a unique 4-bedroom villa situated on the banks of lake Apavatn & river Hólaá. Just a few steps to set out on a kayak or fishing in the river.
The house is 184 m2, with a fully equipped kitchen, a terrace with a hot tub & a seating area facing the lake. It includes free WiFI, smartTV´s, sauna, washing machine & dryer.
It is perfectly situated in the Golden Circle, Geysir, Gullfoss Waterfall & Thingvellir National Park. It is 10 km from the town Laugarvatn where there are restaurants & Fontana Spa.
Kayaks, fishing poles on premises.
Fishing permits for fishing anywhere in the lake included for guests that book on our site.
